New Year S Mochi Decoration
Kagami mochi 鏡餅 is a special traditional japanese decoration for the new year usually displayed inside the house in the kamidana for toshigami the god of the new year to bring good luck and prosperity in the new year.

Kagami mochi is the traditional new years house decoration made from two mochi stacked on top of each other decorated in various ways and placed on an altar. It usually consists of two round mochi rice cakes the smaller placed atop the larger and a daidai a japanese bitter orange with an attached leaf on top in addition it may have a sheet of konbu and a skewer of dried persimmons under the mochi.
This decoration is mainly made from mochi rice cake it is decorated until 11 01. It is believed to represent the coming and going of years and the bitter orange on top called daidai is meant to represent the generations in a family as the words are pronounced. Kagami mochi is made from two rice cakes mochi of different sizes the smaller placed over the larger one and a daidai a japanese type of bitter orange placed.
